Common Barrel Lock Designs on Meter Boxes

The most frequent design you will see is the standard cylindrical barrel lock. This lock has a small keyway on the end that fits a specific shape. Inside the barrel, there are pins that must align perfectly with the grooves on the key. If the pattern of the grooves does not match the pins, the lock will not rotate.

Some utility companies use locks with extra features to show if someone has tried to force them open. These tamper-evident locks might use a rotating face or a specific internal spring mechanism. If you are dealing with a newer box, the lock might be part of a larger security system that requires more than just a simple key turn to release the latch.
